#thepinktriangle

During Pride Month 2023, The Pink Triangle will return to its classic canvas look, first started by Patrick Carney in 1996.

Illuminate is honored to have partnered with Patrick on illuminating The Pink Triangle in 2020 when it was threatened by COVID restrictions on volunteers, and lighting the installation for all of Pride Month during 2021 and 2022.

Not only did we add 3,000 pink LEDs, we also created an extraordinary Pink Torch Procession, which ran through Oakland and San Francisco on its way to the official Grand Lighting.

Patrick is credited with bringing an increased awareness of Nazi atrocities during World War II to a new generation of LGBT people and their straight allies. Now, Patrick Carney will be honored by the San Francisco Pride board of directors as the iconic pink triangle installation he co-founded marks its 20th anniversary.

Carney is 2015’s Gilbert Baker Pride Founder’s Award recipient, and was selected by the board of the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee. For the 20th year, Carney, assisted by a large group of volunteers, will install the giant pink triangle atop Twin Peaks over Pride weekend, June 27-28.
