7X7: 49 beams of light to rise above Civic Center during a historic summer for San Francisco

Massive New Laser Install Coming to Civic Center Sunday

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — June 16, 2026 — Arts nonprofit Illuminate announced today that it will celebrate an incredible two weeks in the city with an extraordinary 7×7 grid of laser space cannons shooting straight up into the air. The laser cannons, most recently seen atop the Transamerica Pyramid shooting onto Coit Tower and One Sansome Street, will be elevated 10-feet above ground on a truss system, allowing fans to walk beneath the lasers.

The installation will be visible from dusk until dawn for 14 consecutive nights, beginning on June 21 and ending on July 4.

“With the Summer Solstice, Pride, six World Cup matches, San Francisco’s 250th and America’s 250th all in the span of two weeks, it’s an amazing stretch here in the city,” said Illuminate CEO Ben Davis, who conceived of the 7×7 grid to honor the city’s famous dimensions. “We decided it warranted an epic installation, while the world is watching.”

The lasers, a partnership with Nu-Salt Laser International, will change color throughout the two weeks, including rainbow colors during Pride and American Flag colors on July 4.

The truss system is specially designed to allow for a full immersion into the laser grid. Visitors will be able to walk beneath the entire 49-laser installation, allowing a straight-up view from under and between the lasers.
