The Whale’s Tail Returns Memorial Day Weekend, Marking the Official Start of Summer

Free seasonal gathering spot on the Golden Mile brings live music, food trucks, yoga, themed weekends, and park-friendly fun to the JFK Promenade

SAN FRANCISCO, CA , May 14, 2026, The beloved Whale’s Tail Garden Bar returns to Golden Gate Park this Memorial Day Weekend, welcoming San Franciscans and visitors back to one of the city’s most joyful outdoor gathering places along the Golden Mile.

Located at the 14th Avenue East Meadow near the Rose Garden on the JFK Promenade, The Whale’s Tail is a free, open-air destination for live music, a variety of food and drinks, community programming, and relaxing afternoons in the park.

The seasonal activation is named for the famous Street Whale art installation and is presented through a collaboration between NPU Live, Illuminate, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

Beginning Memorial Day Weekend, The Whale’s Tail will be open noon to 6:00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, plus select holidays, including Memorial Day.

“Over the last few years, The Whale’s Tail has really found its place in Golden Gate Park,” said San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Sarah Madland. “People have made it part of their weekends, stopping by after a walk or bike ride, bringing dogs and kids, listening to live music, or just spending time outside. It’s a good example of how our parks can bring people together in a way that feels easy and distinctly San Francisco.”

“Illuminate is thrilled to continue on with The Whale’s Tail in Golden Gate Park,” said Illuminate CEO Ben Davis. “It’s a special place that has evolved into a destination stop. There’s really nothing better than a relaxing afternoon enjoying the park’s beauty, live music and a cold beverage.”

This year’s programming will include a rotating lineup of musical acts throughout the season, weekly free yoga in the park, and special theme weekends designed for a wide range of park-goers. Upcoming themes include Picnic in the Park, Sports & Wellness, Kids’ Day with face painters and storytellers, and more to be announced.

Guests can enjoy cold and hot drinks from the bar (with plenty of N/A options available), along with a rotating assortment of local favorite food trucks offering bites throughout the season.

As always, The Whale’s Tail will be open to guests of all ages, and is both dog and bike-friendly.

“Golden Gate Park belongs to everyone, and The Whale’s Tail is designed with that same openness in mind,” said Andrea Kirk, General Manager at NPU Live. “Whether you’re coming for live music, meeting friends after a ride, bringing the kids for a themed weekend, or simply looking for a place to relax in the sun, there is a place for you here.”

The Whale’s Tail Garden Bar is free to attend. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. You can find a full list of performers and upcoming events at https://illuminate.org/venues/the-whales-tail/ or @thewhalestail_sf on Instagram.
