About The Bands

Honor Brass Band

A funky and swinging brass band, SF’s Honor Brass Band puts it’s spin on contemporary sounds and classics alike — a brass band for all occasions.

Looking for that New Orleans sound with a Bay Area twist? We’ve got it. Honoring the traditional repertoire with classics like When The Saints Go Marching In, Down By the Riverside, and A Closer Walk With Thee, we also incorporate soul and contemporary songs from artists like Marvin Gaye, Bruno Mars, MJ, Stevie Wonder, and more.

MJ’s Brass Boppers

Attending a MJ’s Brass Boppers shows is the next best thing to following a brass band down New Orleans’ famed Claiborne Ave. The swinging and singing brass-line is the Bay Area’s only New Orleans-style brass band whose founding members were born and raised in New Orleans itself.

This group’s sound has been meticulously formed over years of practicing and experimenting together from concert halls to street corners, fusing classic cultural New Orleans performance with funk, jazz, modern pop, and a second line twist.

Since 2008, the tight knit musicians have written, practiced, and performed together at festivals, community events, nightclubs, and street corners around the Bay Area and beyond. They’ve opened for a variety of acts, including George Clinton & Funkadelic, The O’Jays, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave, Funky Meters, George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste, Kermit Ruffins, Katdelic, and many more.

Together, these musicians come together as the versatile MJ’s Brass Boppers, offering a taste of authentic New Orleans style with a West Coast flair.

Jazz Mafia

Based on the tried and true New Orleans brass ensemble, the Brass Mafia includes trombone, trumpet, saxes, drums and most importantly TUBA! But while the band is based on a 100-year-old tradition, the group’s sound incorporates music from many different decades and continents, playing a wide variety of originals and unexpected mashups, with frequent rapper and vocalist guests.

Brass Mafia puts a strong emphasis on heavy backbeats, creative improvisation and a unique mix of songs and arrangements. They have been featured at events for SFJAZZ, SF Annual Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday Parade (7 years) and have collaborated with Lyrics Born, Thomas Dolby, Peter Rowan, and Nicki Bluhm. They’ve proven themselves a powerful and entertaining Marching Band as well as one of the best nightclub bands around – and their many sold out shows attest to it.
