Principle 5: Inspire Generous Collaboration

Select only projects that require disparate groups to work together.
At Illuminate, we don’t chase easy wins.
We pursue the bold, the uncertain, the never-been-done-before.
To take worthy risks means more than being brave.
It means being willing to try something ambitious, even if it might not work.
It means leaning into the unknown—guided by vision, not by guarantees.
The Bay Lights arrived as an impossible vision—one bridge, 25,000 lights, and a million reasons it shouldn’t happen.
The revival of the Golden Gate Bandshell began with a simple belief: that the Music Concourse should once again be full of music.
Grace Light took two years of experimentation and refinement—quiet trials in the cathedral until the experience could meet the wonder of its setting.
And sometimes, it means boldly bringing a 100-foot-long sea serpent that blows bubbles through its nose into the Rainbow Falls pond in Golden Gate Park. That’s coming later this year.
These weren’t safe bets.
They were leaps of faith.
But they were worthy—because they had the potential to uplift, to connect, to transform.
And just as important as the leap is the sharing of the journey.
When we take risks, we bring people along.
We share the process. We share the missteps. We share what we learn.
Because transparency builds trust.
And trust makes more risk possible.
Not every attempt becomes a monument.
But every attempt makes us bolder, better, and more honest.
In the City of Awe, we’re not afraid to fail.
We’re only afraid of playing it too safe to ever be moved.
